A year ago at this time, I was probably in the worst place I’ve ever been. I was using everyday and relied on substances to get me through the day. My relationship with my family was virtually nonexistent and I was generally miserable.
When my mom found Insight and I visited the shop for the first time, I was immediately met with kindness and open arms. I’d never experienced this type of treatment from strangers. I knew that this was something I wanted to be a part of. When I joined outpatient, I continued to struggle with unhealthy coping mechanisms and relapses. After awhile, I hit a bottom and started to become more involved in my recovery. My friends and counselors never gave up on me and gave me unconditional love and support even when I wasn’t willing.
Today, I can say that I am genuinely happy. I’ve found a greater purpose through helping people who are currently struggling like I did. I recently hit 6 months sober and got on steering committee. I’m in school and am thinking about college, which I would’ve never considered in the past. I am working and am able to be a reliable employee. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunities that I’ve been given through recovery and am trying to pay it forward. I could’ve never fathomed being in this spot a year ago and I could not have done it without the support of Insight and the Mustard Tree Foundation.
